About Robert

Having graduated with a Master’s in GIS, Robert has recently joined Interpret as a Graduate Consultant. Throughout his studies, Robert gained experience in a wide range of geospatial techniques, including spatial analysis, remote sensing, cartography and research. His thesis used regression modelling to determine whether the spatiality of air pollution was correlated with patterns of COPD. Robert is now working across various road safety projects at Interpret.

What Robert has to say:

What made you decide to become a geospatial professional?

I’ve always been fascinated with maps and atlases, but didn’t consider it a career path until I was introduced to GIS during my undergraduate geography degree. I instantly recognised how useful the technology could be to many different industries, and that a career in GIS would provide much variety and opportunity.

What did you do before joining Interpret?

In early 2016, I completed my Master’s in GIS at the University of Canterbury. During my studies, I also tutored various geospatial courses and undertook further research for the GeoHealth Laboratory in partnership with the Canterbury District Health Board. Before arriving at Interpret, I spent a few months teaching English in the south of France.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The friendly and supportive team at Interpret make it a pleasure to come to work every day. With such a treasure trove of knowledge within the team, each member has valuable insights to offer.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

Being constantly introduced to new and innovative techniques. It’s exciting to work for a company that not only reacts quickly to industry changes, but often drives those changes. We are encouraged to seek better methods to achieve our goals.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

Completing my Master’s degree and entering the geospatial industry with Interpret. I am looking forward to the opportunities and challenges that this company will provide me into the future.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

My passions include amateur photography, writing, classic cars, and comedy. I also enjoy spending time in New Zealand’s wilderness, and try to explore it as often as possible.
