What Paul has to say:

What made you decide to lead a GIS consultancy?

When studying towards my Civil Engineering degree at the University of Canterbury I developed a particular interest for transport matters which ultimately led me towards a career as a transport engineer.  I have used GIS throughout my career in the road safety space. The use of transport engineering and GIS has enabled Interpret to be at the forefront of road safety innovation.

What did you do before joining Interpret?

I have worked for a number of multi-national consultants.  I also worked in Australia for a firm solely focused on traffic and transport.  My work in the road safety area has resulted in a significant cross-over with GIS and increased my interest in how GIS can contribute to making our roads safer. This has ultimately led me to lead the team at Interpret.

What does a typical day in the office include?

I’m involved in direction and management of a lot of different projects.  A typical day involves corresponding with a lot of clients, external project teams and working with other staff at Interpret to understand and monitor project progress and quality.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I really enjoy thinking outside of the box.  Challenging the way we traditionally address problems and searching for new and innovative methods of delivering better and more efficient solutions for our clients.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

Finding the time to put energy into the development of the business – both internal and external of the organisation.  Having said that, doing your best for your clients is probably the main thing you can do to ensure the continued success of any business.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

I take great pleasure in being a key part of the success of Interpret.  From a technical perspective, receiving the 3M Traffic Engineer of the Year award at the 2015 IPENZ Transportation Group Conference for the most innovative traffic safety project was particularly satisfying. This project had a large GIS component to it.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Spare time is a bit of a foreign concept nowadays.  My two boys keep me pretty occupied outside of work – fortunately their interest in sports matches mine.  I enjoy running and trying out the new restaurants popping up around Christchurch with my wife.
