Stacy Rendall

Principal Spatial Researcher

ABOUT STACY

Starting out as a Mechanical Engineer, Stacy completed a PhD in Energy Systems Engineering for which he developed a GIS-based model assessing the resilience of household travel to energy constraints. His thesis research combined elements of transport accessibility, activity modelling and energy systems. Stacy is now a research specialist with a combination of postdoctoral and professional experience working on projects that bring together a variety of fields including GIS, transport, systems engineering, modelling, programming for data manipulation and analysis, and web development.

WHAT STACY HAS TO SAY:

What made you decide to become a geospatial professional?

During my thesis I delved into the world of spatial analysis and computer programming, and I haven’t looked back!

What did you do before joining Interpret?

I worked on my PhD thesis with the team at Abley Transportation Consultants between 2010 and 2012. Afterwards I did a two-year postdoc at the University of Canterbury, before returning to Abley full time for a year. I spent the next two years doing my OE, based in Scotland. Over four months I worked on a UK DfT Transport Technology Innovation Grant (T-TRIG) project, which researched and developed a web tool to assist students in travelling to school safely. I later worked as a full-stack web developer and GIS consultant focusing on APIs, algorithm integration and mobile applications.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I really enjoy the huge range of problems we get to work on, the process of finding interesting solutions to difficult problems and developing innovative new techniques to improve on existing solutions.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

The technology scene is constantly growing and evolving, with new packages, tools, languages and frameworks appearing every day. Constantly pushing myself to understand the latest tech and keep up to date is a rewarding challenge that highlights lots of interesting new things and better ways of getting the job done.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

There probably isn’t a specific moment that stands out above everything else! I have really enjoyed a couple of projects where I came up with an idea to solve a problem, researched and developed the concept, implemented the idea and came out with a great result for the client.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Playing music, mountain biking, brewing beer, messing around with computers (especially Linux) and getting outdoors to do some tramping, camping or fishing.
