THE CHALLENGE

Auckland Transport was seeking to identify areas of congestion for different modes of travel/road users on their road network. A network wide assessment of congestion can help to prioritise solutions and target effective traffic management strategies.

THE SOLUTION

In line with the Austroads framework for assessing congestion and Level of Service (the performance of different modes), Interpret drew upon a variety of GIS data sets to calculate congestion and Level of Service metrics for traffic in the morning peak (AM), inter-peak (IP) and evening peak (PM) on the Auckland road network.

THE OUTCOME

Interpret produced an online web mapping application displaying the Auckland road network, identifying the priority routes for each mode of travel and several other attributes, including average daily traffic, speed, congestion, and the Level of Service for different modes during the AM, IP and PM peak periods.
